England take on Sweden in the third quarter-final of World Cup 2018 this afternoon.
The match takes place at the Samara Arena, and will be shown live on the BBC.
England progressed to this contest after beating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout, the first time they had triumphed on spot kicks at a World Cup tournament, and only the second time overall, having previously beat Spain at Euro 96.
Harry Kane scored in a sixth consecutive England match to give his side the lead early in the second half, only to see the South Americans equalise in stoppage time, and after extra time still couldn’t separate the teams, Eric Dier scored the decisive penalty to send England through.
The Three Lions will now aim to reach their first semi-final since Italia 90, where they finished in fourth place after losing to the hosts in the third-place play-off.
Gareth Southgate’s men will be up against a Sweden side that they most recently faced in a major tournament back in 2012, when they triumphed 3-2 in a European Championship group match in Kiev.
In their previous fixture, a deflected Emil Forsberg strike earned Janne Andersson’s men a 1-0 win against a Switzerland team situated 18 places above them in the FIFA World Rankings, securing them a place in the quarter-finals for the first time since 1994.
The Scandanavian side have only conceding two goals during the tournament, with both of those coming in a 2-1 group-stage defeat to 2014 champions Germany, and they are now looking to reach a World Cup final for the first time since 1958, where they finished runners-up to Brazil.
The match will also be streamed live via the BBC iPlayer.
