News 24 countdown has an extra second in it?

    Dear All,

    I have seen the countdown sequence on BBC News 24 in all its’ three presentations since this feature was introduced in 1999, and I can’t help feeling that the current countdown sequence music has an extra second hidden in it.

    Listen to the countdown sequence from the original music used from 1999-2003. There are 11 “blips” from 10 seconds to zero seconds (eg 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 = 11 blips total)….The same is also true for the 2003-2005 music: again 11 blips.

    The current music is no different in that the first higher-pitched blip starts on ten, but after the 11 blip for “zero”, there is a 12th blip a second after this. What is it for?!?!

    No it is correct. 10 seconds does not start as soon as the counter shows 10. As soon as 10 appears the counter shows 10.24, 10 is at 10.00. What you are counting is the pip for 11 seconds, 10 – 1 and zero as well, thus giving 12 pips.
