Sky Announces New Africa Correspondent

Sky News has appointed Emma Hurd as its Africa Correspondent.

Emma, currently Sky News’ Middle East Correspondent has been at Sky News for 10 years. She joined the channel in September 1996 from the BBC.

Emma moved to Washington in October 2000 where she led the New York coverage of the September 11 attacks before heading to Pakistan to report on the US military action in neighbouring Afghanistan. In 2003, she was embedded with British forces during the invasion of Iraq.

During her time as Middle East Correspondent she covered the death of Yasser Arafat, Hamas’ rise to power and the Israeli Election.

Nick Pollard, Head of Sky News, said: “Emma is an award-winning journalist and one of our most experienced foreign correspondents. Emma has reported from the Middle East at a period of intense conflict. She reported from southern Iraq during the Gulf War in 2003 and has intimately followed the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Just last week she carried out the first UK broadcast interview with the new Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

“Africa will be a new territory for Emma and her first posting to the southern hemisphere. We are delighted that she will be taking up the post.”

Emma Hurd added: “I am thrilled to be heading up Sky’s Africa operation. It’s a fascinating continent which deserves much more of the world’s attention. I’m looking forward to bringing more of the important stories from Africa to our viewers.”

Emma will take up the post from September.
