Journalist Penny Marshall has had to delay her start at BBC News following ill heath.

The corporations new Eduction Editor was due to start work on Monday 23 June, but instead is recovering from a small operation.

Penny said: “Unfortunately won’t be my first day at BBC tomorrow as planned because of a heath issue. Send news views & reading to help speed recovery.”

Today she tweeted:

Speaking of her appointment in March, Penny said: “I am very excited to be joining the BBC to work alongside journalists I have long admired. I think the creation of this post rightly puts the issue of education at the heart of the domestic news agenda at a critical time of change. I can’t wait to start.”

Before joining the BBC, Penny worked at ITV News as Social Affairs Editor, where she led in-depth reporting and analysis of immediate issues affecting the lives of the British public, from education to welfare and public services.

Marshall joined ITN in 1985 as a production trainee, becoming an editorial trainee in 1987 and qualifying as a writer in February 1988. She was then appointed Home/Media Affairs Correspondent before becoming a general reporter in the summer of 1989.
