Ben Moore – Q&A

Name?
Ben Moore

Age?
29

Where are you from?
Leeds

How did you get started in broadcasting?
Like many I got into student media. I worked for URN (University Radio Nottingham) where I studied and was an editor for the Uni newspaper Impact. I went on to make the tea at Radio Nottingham during term time and Radio Leeds in the summer hols…. it developed from there.

When was that?
Back in 1998

Why News broadcasting?
It was that or being a lawyer….apparently my parents tell me I used to pretend to be a TV reporter when I was little, so it seems I’ve always wanted to be a journalist. How sad!

Where else would have viewers seen or heard you before?
I was the Bradford reporter for BBC Look North for 5 years. I was mainly used as the end item guy and they had me doing lots of silly things. Harry and Christa used to back ref pretty much every report I did with the words silly boy. Made my Dad so proud!

What is your Best on-air moment?
I’m a real believer in not just scratching the surface of a story. I film a lot of my own stuff so can sometimes spend days with people getting to the real issues and, of course, the emotions behind it. Any story I do like that I would say have been my best moments.

What is your Worst on-air moment?
Leeds Festival 2003 interviewing the great Jo Whiley. Some joker roadie sprayed me with about 200 gallons of water about 10 seconds before I went live. It was funny, but completely threw me, I stuttered absolutely drenched through the next 3 minutes.

What would you like to do before your career ends?
Learn how to stop being nervous before going live.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I’m a keen cricketer, love anything James Bond and Star Wars… I’m also partial to a pint of decent bitter.

What advice would you give to anyone that would like to get into the broadcasting world?
With everyone and their dogs going to University these days you need to make sure you get yourself three things….. lots of work experience, lots of work experience and, of course, lots of work experience.

A big thanks to Ben for taking part.
